I liked that it was built out of the basic premise for Hamlet and that there were references to the play but it was entirely it's own story and one that needed to be told. I think the best part is that it was "accessible" to people because, even if you haven't read Hamlet, you know the general story line so you had a bit of an idea of what was going to happen. However, this story is so much more than just about Hanalee finding her father's killer and I highly recommend this one.

I thought this was a case of sloppy execution. I felt like it was too much a repeat of the first novel and not enough of it's OWN novel. I thought maybe I would learn to love Liam and Ruby because I had heard such great things about how amazing he was, but I was left feeling kinda blah about it and them. It would have been better if the whole mind erasure thing from the first book hadn't happened because I wasn't a fan of it as a plot device, tbh.

Honestly, this one started out a bit slow but picked up some pace. I enjoyed it but not nearly as much as I thought I would. The ending left me wanting more and I honestly don't see how there could be a sequel to it. Sure there were a couple things left unresolved, but in my opinion, not having read the second book, I would say this could have been a stand alone.

I am actually sad to be writing this review right now because I wanted to love THIEF OF LIES because it sounded as though it had the makings to be a wonderful book. Alas, it fell short. It was more about the "sexy" than about the plot and I found myself wishing to be done the novel rather than enjoying reading it.

This book had so much potential, in my opinion. The plot is well thought out and I didn't mind that it was similar to others before because obviously I enjoyed those novels, so I would have enjoyed this one too. Except I didn't. Because I had to listen to Gia call Arik "sexy" about a billion times. It was so out of the blue and not the Gia that is described in the summary that I almost DNF-ed the book after the first "sexy" to be honest.

And this review is going to focus on the horrible romance instead of the plot. Why, you may ask? Because the book also focused on the romance instead of the plot. It was so romance heavy that I almost missed that there was an actual bad guy in the story and not just "hot" Veronique being the bad guy for making googly eyes at Arik. But the worst part about it is that the bad guy and his motives and the prophecy and all that were the best parts of this novel. They were so much stronger than "forbidden love" and "hot wizard betrothal" that I savoured the couple of paragraphs we got about the evil and the training, even though a lot of it felt like a history lesson nobody asked for.

I really, really, really wanted to like this one. I wanted to be enthralled by the libraries that we went to (which was minimal, tbh) and I wanted to be swept up in a fantasy world (also minimal) and even swept up in a background romance (not this blech we got). But none of that happened. It just felt like a bit of a waste to me. There was such intricate world building that was used solely for the purpose of a forbidden romance that most likely won't be forbidden by the end of the series.

I fell head over heels with Phillips' writing when I read FAKING PERFECT so when I saw she had another book coming out, I knew I just had to read it. And I'm so glad I did because ANY OTHER GIRL was so good. It was the perfect summer romance novel and I loved every second of my reading of it.

Over But Not Forgotten: #FAC16

Even though it feels like #FAC16 is never ending since I think about it in my daily life, it sadly has come to an end. I did a recap of the first chat, the Science Fiction/Fantasy/Historical Fiction chat, the Contemporary/Mystery/Thriller chat, and the final chat. But in case you think that is too much to read, I am going to give you a fun break down here of what happened over the last month.

So. What does THE WANDERERS have to offer?

• An extremely likable and strong heroine.
• An adorable romance.
• One killer storyline.
• Feels. Lots of feels. Crying ones are definitely involved.
• Characters that stay with you long after you've turned the last page.

The Story

First of all, THE WANDERERS blew my expectations out of the water. I cannot express how much I love this book. Last night I was awake until the wee hours of the morning just so I could finish, and it was SO worth it. (See my half-crazed midnight tweets for proof! Haha!)
THE WANDERERS is one of the most unique books I've ever read. A brilliant new take on shape-shifters. The story is fast-paced and full of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat, not a single moment or page dull. Kate Ormand has done an AMAZING job at crafting this gorgeous piece of literature.

The Characters

THE WANDERERS is chock-full of interesting characters. Our main protagonist, Flo, is sixteen and a shifter. I won't say what animal she changes into as that was one of the main things I was eager to find out when I began reading the book! I loved Flo. I want to take her out of the novel and hug her tight. Both before and during the book (and no doubt after) she has faced so much hardship and pain. The same goes for Flo's (adorable) boyfriend, Jett, who is a bear shape-shifter. I simply adore Jett. Flo and Jett have THE most adorable romance, and I'm waving the Flojett shipper flag high and proud. While romance is not a big factor in the book, there's enough of it so that you don't feel like there should have been more to make the story even better. It was the perfect amount of romance for me, and I'm a massive die-hard romance lover.

The secondary characters are just as amazing as Flo and Jett - each one has their own story, their own animal shape and place in the world of THE WANDERERS. The only issue I had with the tons of characters was the fact I kept forgetting who could turn into what animal. But it wasn't that big an issue.



And finally... Right now I'm on the verge of insanity. Why? I'm hoping that THE WANDERERS is NOT a standalone. I think I'd actually sniffle and cry if it IS a standalone. After that ending... I need more. MOAARRR. Kate Ormand has hooked me and reeled me in well and truly. If you like animals, exquisite storylines, cute romance and strong characters, you need this book. Not want, need.

At a whopping 613 pages, this book was far from an easy read. With twists at every corner, it was an incredibly hard book to follow at times. New characters only added to the confusion. And some were unneeded, as if they had been carelessly thrown in as a page filler at the last minute to make the book as gigantic as it is.

Karou, our favourite blue-haired heroine is back, and she does not disappoint. An extremely strong and resilient heroine all the way to the climatic (and confusing) ending.  There will never be another YA heroine like Karou. She is one of those rare characters that  can never be compared to any other. She will never be forgotten. And since there seems to be a movie in the works, she might be resurfacing very soon! A face to the name we all know so well.

I adored Akiva in this book. Who doesn’t like Akiva? A beautifully crafted character that you cannot help but love. In this book we see Akiva and Karou’s disastrous relationship somewhat fixing itself piece by piece. After the zero-romance in Days of Blood and Starlight, I think everyone was hoping and praying we’d at long last see the couple reunite. 

I admit it, I was hoping and praying for Brimstone’s return throughout the book. If Issa had survived by the skin of her teeth, I truly wondered whether Brimstone had. But… alas, no. He’s gone. *weeps*

This trilogy has long been one of my favourites, the amazing world of Eretz more than inspiring. Karou has caused me to dye my hair blue on more than one occasion. I have zero regrets! 

Laini Taylor has one heck of an imagination. Seriously, can I crawl inside her head and live in there? The world building, the imagery and words… it’s like the books are exquisite poetry that flow and twist, dragging you into the book and world itself with chimaera claws hooked into you. DOGAM wasn’t as good as the first two, but still an amazing feat that not many authors could pull off.

And the cover! The US covers are beautiful, but the UK DOGAM blew me away! The blue, the birds… wow. Just wow! Whoever designed this cover -no, the covers of the entire UK hardback trilogy deserve a medal. Gorgeous covers for a gorgeous story.

The fact that there will be no more Karou and Akiva is agonizing. Thank you Laini for creating this beautiful, vibrant world and characters. It will be sorely missed by all.

Shadow and Bone has been sat on my shelf so long it was actually starting to collect dust. The first time I attempted this book, it was not to my taste at all. 

But now, a year later, I have opened my arms and embraced the majesty that is Shadow and Bone. 

This book sounded a little odd from the back cover, but still strangely appealing.  Obviously high-fantasy from the blurb. 

Alina Starkov is an orphan. There doesn’t seem to be anything remotely special about her until a crossing through the Shadow Fold, a slice of impenetrable darkness through the land of Ravka. She and the rest of the group are attacked by a group of monstrous winged Volcra. Alina discovers a power beyond her imagination and finds herself thrust into the world of the Grisha. The magical elite with the Darkling at the top. While Alina is now known as the Sun Summoner, the Darkling is the complete opposite. A being of darkness, deception and for Alina, attraction. 

I adored Alina. She never once annoyed me, which is very rare in a YA book. She reminds me of Celaena Sardothien from Throne of Glass. There is an air about Alina that you also see around Celaena. 

The beginning of the book was slow, but within the slightly sluggish pages, there was a lot of important information. There is a method to the speed, one where you get to know the characters better and learn more about Alina’s home, Ravka. 

I was instantly swallowed up by Alina’s world. Once you get over the complexity of the different kind of Grisha, you really start to get into the book. Beautiful imagery too. At times during Shadow and Bone, I almost felt like I was there in Ravka. Could see the Volcra and imagine their screeching. Fascinating imagery. Really fascinating.

The characters were vibrant, alive and unforgettable. Mal we do not see much of in Shadow and Bone, but even he left his mark. Especially during the climatic ending. Wow, that was one hell of a ride.

Yes. He is next. The Darkling.  

Wow. Can I say hot? As soon as we met him, BAM! That was it. All that insta-love cheesiness. I love the Darkling’s character. He’s exceedingly intricate, mysterious and more than a little bit scary. With powers that far surpass any other Grisha in the world, he’s lethal. And he’s certainly demonstrated the extent of his powers numerous times, which horrifies Alina.

Alina cannot help her attraction to him. And I must admit, even with what happened in the end, I still ship them hardcore. But I ship Mal and Alina too.  Oh well, I will carry on shipping both ships to my hearts content. Even if one ship is named Titanic.

This book was a mass of feels and sexy strange boys and men. Quite easily one of the best high-fantasy books in this kind of style since Throne of Glass. 

Five superfat stars with a naked Darkling on top. I’m plowing through Siege and Storm at the moment, and it is not disappointing.

MONDAY MEMORIES: Throne of Glass

Monday. Urgh, don't you just hate Mondays with a burning passion? But on the positive side, it's Monday Memories. What is that you ask? It's where we revisit an old favourite of ours. Book, that is.

Today, the book of Monday Memories is

Throne of Glass by the amazing Sarah J.Maas.

When I first saw this book when it came out, I shunned it instantly. Assassin books are not my taste. At all. But then Crown of Midnight came out and well... I soon regretted not picking this up when it very first came out.

Celaena Sardothien is, in my eyes, one of the greatest modern day YA heroines. Her character has faced so many hardships, yet overcomes them all. Miss. Maas has created a truly beautiful and complex young woman that all teenage girls should look up to. I see teenage girls on Twitter constantly reading Throne of Glass, and they have changed because of it. This book has the power to strengthen young girl's minds and make them stronger in every aspect. And that is an impossibly rare trait to see in a YA book in this day and age. 

The sequel, Crown of Midnight, did not disappoint either. In this book we see Celaena and her love interest Chaol, plus Prince Dorian face more dangers. Dangers that can and will affect them all. 

The romance between Chaol and Celaena is the perfect balance you need for a successful YA book. Sizzling at times, Chaolaena are a pairing that will never be dismissed as cringey or any other demeaning phrase. 

The Throne of Glass books were in my Top 5 Favorites of 2013, and when Heir of Fire comes out later this year, I'm sure that will be a favourite of 2014 also.

REVIEW: SING SWEET NIGHTINGALE by Erica Cameron (plus competition)

What first attracted me to this book was the name initially. SING SWEET NIGHTINGALE. Every time I thought of it, Disney’s Cinderella would be singing the song inside my head. And when I read what it was about, Beyoncé’s Sweet Dreams would kick off as well. Basically this book has created a (very strange) mash-up of epic proportions. 

Right! Where to start? The cover. Gorgeous isn’t it? Before reading this book, I wondered if the light in her hand symbolized something, or the mask… and they do! Once you’ve read Sing Sweet Nightingale, you’ll be able to pick out a whole host of things from the cover that is included in the book.

And now we turn our attention to the characters. Mariella isn’t as strong as your usual YA heroine, but that doesn’t mean she’s one to be ignored. Even while saying nothing, she’s a feisty little thing that will bring a smile to your lips and even make you laugh a few times. Her weakness does not make her a coward. At all. Mariella is human. And humans constantly make mistakes. It’s what makes us who we are, really. Mariella’s flaws are simply a result of being human, and taken in by a beautiful lie that we all would be deceived by.

And now for Hudson. 

I’m pretty sure everyone these days knows how much I  (obsess over) like guys with white-blond hair and black eyes.  This totally has nothing to do with a certain murderous figure in Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments. [shifty look]

2013 was the year of YA ‘bad boys,’ don’t deny it. But with 2014, I’m seeing less of them. Is this good or bad? I’ve not decided yet. Hudson Vincent is a type of YA guy you don’t see very often at all. Totally committed to his cause, Hudson is a genuinely nice guy. A little weird, but hey- all the best people are weird. He’s lost so much in his life and constantly fighting a battle he’s neither winning nor losing. Hudson is an amazing character. And hot too, we can’t forget that.

All through the book, he and Mariella were slowly growing closer and you could see it.

SING SWEET NIGHTINGALE was a beautiful read that also took place in another world. A dream world. I won’t say anything else because I don’t want to spoil it for those who are going to read it, but you’re going to love this book and it’s unforgettable characters.

On Tuesday night, Erica and Reading With Me held a live Q+A session on YouTube. There was a lot of craziness, chair spinning and laughing. Erica Cameron knew that writing was her passion when she turned a picture book into a mystery novella as a teen. That piece wasn’t her best work, but it got her an A. After college, she used her degree in Psychology and Creative Writing to shape a story about a dreamworld. Then a chance encounter at a rooftop party in Tribeca made her dream career a reality.

Erica is many things but most notably the following: writer, reader, editor, dancer, choreographer, singer, lover of musical theater, movie obsessed, sucker for romance, Florida resident, and quasi-recluse. She loves the beach but hates the heat, has equal passion for the art of Salvador Dali and Venetian Carnival masks, has a penchant for unique jewelry and sun/moon décor pieces, and a desire to travel the entire world on a cruise ship. Or a private yacht. You know, whatever works.

Her debut novel Sing Sweet Nightingale releases March 4, 2014 from Spencer Hill Press. It is the first book in The Dream War Saga.
