Shady Characters Need Love Too

Shady Characters Need Love Too

WARNING: This post contains information about character deaths and spoilers.

The villain, the shady character, the one who seems ominous and creepy... they're in every single book in some shape or form. Some of these characters are grey, neither good nor bad. Where some... well, yeah, they'll gut you in a heartbeat. Or chop you in half. So this week I shall share with you five of my favorite shady characters in books. They are in no particular order because some of these are still fighting viciously for the top spot.

New cover for City of Heavenly Fire ... the mortal instruments, book, cover, city of heavenly fire, jonathan morgensternJONATHAN CHRISTOPHER MORGENSTERN AKA SEBASTIAN ~ THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS by CASSANDRA CLARE.

Of course dear Jonathan is on this list. How could he not be? He is shady on level 1000. One of the most tragic figures in YA literature that I have ever read, and certainly one of my most memorable. His story really made my heart ache and throb. While his character is an absolute piece of incest-y sh*t, he's been crafted with such great care, his story flawless and agonizing. Following his tale broke me apart. There will always be questions about him, always. What would have he been like if his father hadn't decided to destroy him so utterly? Could he feel anything? Alas, we will never find out.

"I've never felt so... Light."

Fun fact: I have a tattoo relating to him! Where? Never ask.

Shadow and Bone (Grisha Trilogy #1) - Leigh BardugoTHE DARKLING ~ THE GRISHA TRILOGY by LEIGH BARDUGO

No shady characters list is complete without Leigh Bardugo's Darkling. He positively exudes shadow and darkness... no joke. Take the Shadow Fold for example. He's one scary yet sexy dude. The Darkling makes you walk that fine line between love and hate. It's impossible to full-on love him, yet... it's impossible to wholly hate him! (What have you done to us all, Leigh?!) And of course, he's yet another tragic and damaged figure. A man that is not eligible for redemption, that's for sure. The ending of Ruin and Rising was painful, but very necessary. I will miss the Darkling and his sexy shadiness, that's for sure.

"Fine, make me your villain."

Review: A Court of Thorn and Roses by Sarah J Maas | book'd out
RHYSAND ~ A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES by SARAH J. MAAS

A new Shady McShadester that I discovered at the start of this year! I'm still not sure how I feel about him. His character is elegant yet sinister in a way only Sarah could achieve. His actions are both malicious at times, and helpful at others. But at the end of the day, he's certainly just looking out for himself and the Night Court. He's complicated, strangely hot and I very much look forward to reading more about him. I know I'll end up loving him eventually - this is Sarah J. Maas we're talking about here! ACOTAR 2 is certainly going to be interesting.

"Be glad of your human heart, Feyre. Pity those who don't feel anything at all.”

KAZ BREKKER ~ SIX OF CROWS by LEIGH BARDUGO

Oh yes, another shady shady shady boy from the majesty that is Leigh Bardugo. Now sadly, I can't tell you TOO much about this Bastard of the Barrel because the book hasn't hit the shelves just yet. But rest assured, he will give the Darkling a run for his money when it comes to creepiness. And sexiness. He's a character, like the Darkling, that you know you should dislike, but simply can't. Plus he's the first fictional guy in a book that actually caused me to gag and very nearly throw up. And I have a strong stomach. Good luck with this guy (and book!), ladies. You'll need it.

"When everyone knows you're a monster, you needn't waste your time doing every monstrous thing."

72193DRACO MALFOY ~ HARRY POTTER SERIES by J.K.ROWLING

Of course Draco is here on the list. He was the first shady character I ever read. Or at least, can remember. He, his father and Lord Shady. Who doesn't know who Draco Malfoy is?! If you have never heard of his name before, his father will hear about this, make no mistake.

(Insert your fave Draco quote here)

Okay, so there's also a number six on this list. I could not help myself. And that spot goes to...

AEDUAN ~ TRUTHWITCH by SUSAN DENNARD

Aeduan is another character that only a small number of people have met, so I can't tell you much about him. But I will say that he has abs hard enough that you can bounce pennies off it. He's also a monk. NOT the kind that you're thinking about! Aeduan is a Carawen monk and he's a Bloodwitch, a type of Voidwitch. Sounds scary, right? Well... He's also called BAEDUAN by his online fans.

Fun fact: There's a scene in TRUTHWITCH where he's wearing nothing but his tattered and ruined shirt. He's also soaking wet. Ice may be required during this part of the book.

"Claim my Aether, guide my blade."

So that is my top 5 (well, six!) shady characters and villains. Who are your top 5?

National Kissing Day: Top 5 bookish kisses & couples

Top 5 Bookish Kisses and Couples

It's National Kissing Day. So in honor of it, I'm posting my top-5 favorite book snogs. (Not in order because YOU CANNOT MAKE ME CHOOSE). There will be spoilers for books in here, so be careful!

1) The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo -- Alina and Nikolai

Shadow and Bone (Grisha Trilogy #1) - Leigh Bardugo
I am a very proud Nikolina shipper. From the moment they met I shipped them with a burning passion. But alas, they and also my other favorite ship of Grisha (the Darkling and Alina) never happened. *Cocks shotgun and aims it at Mal* I honestly believe that Nikolai and Alina would have been amazing together and it pains me even now that their kisses -- no matter how cray-cray they were -- never amounted to anything more. *Allows shotgun to hit Mal* *Walks away* Damn you Mal!

2) A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas -- Feyre and Tamlin

US cover for my new fantasy series, A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES, coming May 5th, 2015! // AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH THIS IS AMAZING I CANNOT WAIT (but this is right smack bang on my GCSEs so I can get it as a reward XD)
Feyre and Tamlin. Can you GET a couple hotter than these two?! I don't think so. Their romance sizzled through the pages. I practically burnt my fingers and eyes reading these two. Sarah does an amazing job at creating scorching couples, I'll give her that! I'm also one of those people who ships Feyre with not only Rhys, but Lucien too. What can I say? Feyre is just SO shippable. I ship her with everything and everyone. Much like Sarah's other book heroine, Celaena Sardothien from Throne of Glass.

3) The Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecket -- Elizabeth and John

Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker | Paperback: 368 pages | Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton (September 1, 2015)
These two are a very recent addition to my list of favorite couples. I read The Witch Hunter a few weeks back and LOVED IT. They have one of the most adorable romances I've read in a long time. She and John TOTALLY deserve to be up here with the greats. John is fluffier than a Pomeranian and I am DESPERATE for book 2 to read more of their growing relationship. *Cuddles John and Elizabeth close*

4) The Infernal Devices/The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare -- EVERYONE

The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments without the typeface xx
It is simply impossible to pick a ship out of Cassandra Clare's books. There's Clary and Jace, Magnus and Alec, Izzy and Simon and so many more. Plus the Herongraystairs ship that is Tessa Gray, William Herondale and James Carstairs in The Infernal Devices. Oh gosh then you have the ships in THAT book too! Nope, I'm going to stop right now and say that every kiss and couple in these books are my favorites.
Except that Sebastian and Clary one in City of Lost Souls. Hell nope. #SayNoToClabastian2015.

5) Trial By Fire by Josephine Angelini -- Lily and Rowan

Trial By Fire by Josephine Angelini • August 28, 2014 • Macmillan Children's Books https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22087268-trial-by-fire
Another brand-new favorite ship! I devoured the beauty that is Trial By Fire in less than a day. And made new book boyfriends in the process! Lily and Rowan easily made the top-5 list with how beautiful they both are. They're just so... UNIQUE! I could go on forever about just why they're such an amazing couple, really. Read Trial By Fire and find out why I love them so much for yourself! You won't be disappointed, I assure you!

So... that's it for my top-5! But there are LOTS more that belong up there. Such as Celaena/Aelin with Chaol, Rowan and Dorian, Penryn and Raffe, Karou and Akiva, Mara and Noah, Merik and *mumbles name because SPOILERS AND I CAN'T SAY* and Aeduan and *MUMBLE MUMBLE MUMBLE* Hmmm, and Jett and Flo, Dimitri and Rose, Peeta and Katniss, Harry and Ginny... Oh heck, I could go on F O R E V E R!

What are YOUR Top-5 book kisses and couples? Let me know below!

Today I am waiting on SIX OF CROWS by Leigh Bardugo.

Basically, I am obsessed with everything and anything Grisha. The lush and vibrant world, the exquisite characters, just... gah, everything!

I bought the first book of the Grisha trilogy so long ago that I can't remember when exactly. But the book I bought was THE GATHERING DARK, the name of Shadow and Bone before it was changed. The cover of the original is so beautiful and really captures the feel of the book. I could gush forever about the Grisha trilogy to be honest.

The Grisha Trilogy shattered me apart and then glued me back together again, and SIX OF CROWS is no doubt going to have the same or similar effect. Books are like onions - there are so many layers.

New characters set in the Grisha world? Count me in! I do hope we see the ones who survived the utter devastation that was Ruin and Rising. Of course... we won't be seeing HIM, which is all kinds of agonizing and heartbreaking.

This duology is going to be amazing as its predecessors, I am sure of it. To those lucky, lucky people who will be getting a review copy of SIX OF CROWS at Book Expo America today, consider me jealous in the extreme. And very likely to assassin-swoop down on you and snag your book.

Donkey, from Shrek. "For your information, there's a lot more to ogres than people think. Example? Okay, um, ogres are like onions. {Sniffs} They stink? Yes - - No! They make you cry? No! Oh, you leave them in the sun they get all brown, start sproutin' little white hairs."
Great. Now I'm thinking about this fellow, onions and ogres.
