REVIEW: THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE by Heidi Heilig

THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE by Heidi Heilig

Summary:
Nix has spent her entire life aboard her father’s ship, sailing across the centuries, across the world, across myth and imagination.

As long as her father has a map for it, he can sail to any time, any place, real or imagined: nineteenth-century China, the land from One Thousand and One Nights, a mythic version of Africa. Along the way they have found crewmates and friends, and even a disarming thief who could come to mean much more to Nix.

But the end to it all looms closer every day.

Her father is obsessed with obtaining the one map, 1868 Honolulu, that could take him back to his lost love, Nix’s mother. Even though getting it—and going there—could erase Nix’s very existence.

For the first time, Nix is entering unknown waters.

She could find herself, find her family, find her own fantastical ability, her own epic love.

Or she could disappear.

I had a really hard time getting into this one to start. It took me about 25% to be hooked, but then I was and it got better as it went along. I had two main problems with it, but I generally liked it and will for sure be reading the sequel! I think Heilig has a good grasp on her niche genre and the characters are ones I really liked!

Waiting on Wednesday: WHERE FUTURES END by Parker Peevyhouse

This week's Waiting on Wednesday is an #FAC16 book that I'm super excited about because it bends genres to create something entirely different and unique. I have heard so many good things about this one and I want to share it with all y'all today.

WHERE FUTURES END by Parker Peevyhouse
Summary:
A collection of five time-spanning, interconnected novellas that weave a subtle science-fictional web that stretches from the present into the future—in a kind of Cloud Atlas for teens—as our world collides with a mysterious alternate universe.

Each of these stories presents a teen trying to find his or her way in unusual circumstances. Five teens, five futures.

Dylan develops a sixth sense that allows him to glimpse another world.

Ten years from now, Brixney must get more hits on her social media feed or risk being stuck in a debtors’ colony.

Thirty years from now, Epony scrubs her entire online profile from the web and goes “High-Concept.”

Sixty years frm now, Reef struggles to survive in a city turned virtual game board.

And more than one hundred years from now, Quinn uncovers the alarming secret that links them all.

Going beyond the usual boundaries of YA fiction, this will appeal to fans of authors—like Marcus Sedgwick, Patrick Ness, Kelly Link, M. T. Anderson, and David Mitchell—who wonder about the future and what the future will bring.

Publisher: Kathy Dawson Books

Doesn't this sound amazing?? I am just so excited to read this one! I think if you like science fiction or speculative fiction, this is going to be the one for you. Next week is my giant WoW for the books I'm waiting on that come out in November 2015, so be sure to watch for that!

ARC REVIEW: FIRSTS by Laurie Elizabeth Flynn

Summary:
Seventeen-year-old Mercedes Ayres has an open-door policy when it comes to her bedroom, but only if the guy fulfills a specific criteria: he has to be a virgin. Mercedes lets the boys get their awkward, fumbling first times over with, and all she asks in return is that they give their girlfriends the perfect first time- the kind Mercedes nrver had herself.

Keeping what goes on in her bedroom a secret has been easy- so far. Her absentee mother isn’t home nearly enough to know about Mercedes’ extracurricular activities, and her uber-religious best friend, Angela, won’t even say the word “sex” until she gets married. But Mercedes doesn’t bank on Angela’s boyfriend finding out about her services and wanting a turn- or on Zach, who likes her for who she is instead of what she can do in bed.

When Mercedes’ perfect system falls apart, she has to find a way to salvage her reputation and figure out where her heart really belongs in the process. Funny, smart, and true-to-life, FIRSTS is a one-of-a-kind young adult novel about growing up.

I went into this one knowing I was going to love it and I was not disappointed. This is the type of contemporary story I love: one that is gritty and raw and leaves you feeling something after you finish. If you are a fan of Sarah Dessen or Gayle Foreman, you're going to love this book.

For those of you who want to know more about the book, check out this post to see a full summary and to enter the SIGNED ARC GIVEAWAY! Again, I'm doing a quick summary of the chat and the buzz around this book for those of you that missed it -- or for those of you that found it was difficult to keep up with the chat. Check out the questions and answers below!
Emily Skrutskie started us off with a doodle of OF FIRE AND STARS and it was magical and wonderful and a great way to get into the spirit of the story...
--
First up was general impressions of the story: what are you curious to find out about while reading OF FIRE AND STARS? Some of my favourite answers were...

--
We moved onto talking about horses since they are central to the story. I asked what everyone thought that role may be. There was a wide variety of answers...

--
Spinning off of that, I asked people to send me pictures of their favourite horses! (Honestly, I got a lot and only included a few but there are more in the #FACSaturday hashtag)

--
Since this is a dual point of view book, I just had to know who everyone was excited to read through. Most people agreed...

--
We also see a lot of characters that all interact with one another, I asked what everyone thought the character's personalities would be like. Some of my favourite answers were...

--
Then we moved onto the magic (because I don't think I can have a conversation without talking about magic). I asked why people thought Denna had to hide her magic and how they thought it would be revealed. Some answers were...

--
And my final question for everyone was: What do you hope Dennaleia and Amaranthine's first interaction will be like? And some of my favourite meet-cute moments that people thought of were...

--
And finally, Audrey revealed something extremely special and amazing. PINTEREST BOARDS for her characters!

It was a super fun chat and I enjoyed talking to all of y'all. A huge thank you to everyone who participated! If you missed this one, tell us in the comments how you think Denna and Mare will meet. I'm excited to see you theories :)

See y'all next week (September 12th, 2015 at 2pm EDT) when we talk about

#FACSATURDAY SPOTLIGHT #2: Of Fire and Stars + signed ARC giveaway

FAC SATURDAY #2 - Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst

It's that time of the week again: #FACSaturday! This week is all about OF FIRE AND STARS by Audrey Coulthurst. Audrey has been kind enough to donate an ARC, upon release, which is up for grabs starting on Saturday and ending during the #FAC16 chat in October. Stick around for the whole chat because at the end, Audrey is going to reveal something pretty nifty (which I am beyond excited for).

Read on for a new teaser summary of the book (which had me bouncing in my seat as I read it):
Princess Dennaleia always puts royal duty first, even if it means hiding her forbidden magic and moving to a new kingdom to marry a prince she’s never met. But as soon as she arrives, it’s clear that a lifetime of studying etiquette, history, and politics didn’t prepare her for everything. She must become an expert horsewoman before her wedding, and the prince’s sister, Amaranthine, is assigned as her reluctant riding instructor. Amaranthine would rather spend her days trolling for information in dangerous parts of the city instead of doing anything she’s supposed to. She’s cocky, curvy, and about as friendly as the business end of a blade—but Dennaleia can’t stop thinking about her.

When a member of the royal family is killed with a magical arrow, Dennaleia’s hidden powers put her at risk of being discovered and condemned. The two princesses must work together to find out who is responsible before the kingdom goes to war. But as they fall in love and Dennaleia’s magic flares out of control, the two must decide whether to obey their duty to the kingdom or sacrifice everything to follow their hearts.

There is no cover yet, but you know it's going to be great with a title like OF FIRE AND STARS! Until then, let's take a peak at one of the most important aspects of the novel: horses
Ain't she a beauty?! I'm really intrigued to see how and why horses are so pivotal to the story! But we can talk about that more on Saturday!
 --
OF FIRE AND STARS is a necessary read for me and I really want to get my hands on it right meow. I can't wait to chat with all y'all about it on Saturday at 2pm EST! Everyone is welcome and you can join in on the fun -- use hashtag #FACSaturday. Nicola will be back and hosting the chat for you guys so make sure you follow her @thewickedpowers on Twitter. If you have any questions before then, tweet me @booksandladders and I will do my best to answer.

Check out the questions and answers below...
Once everyone introduced themselves, it was all about the magic. Everyone was asked if they could have a magical power, what would it be? Some of my favourite answers were...

First impressions are a big deal, so the second question asked everyone what their first impressions of THE CROWN'S GAME were when they heard about it. For the record, mine was to IMMEDIATELY PREORDER IT (which wasn't possible at the time, but is now! I have left the links for this at the bottom of the post). Some of the other answers were...

Romance is always a key component to people's enjoyment of the novel, so the next question centred around that asking people what they wanted out of the romance between Vika and Nikolai's relationship. Here's what people thought...

World building is pretty huge with fantasy novels so of course the next question focused on what people expected to get out of the novel, whether it be fantastical magic, immersion in the time period, or something else entirely! People are really hoping for...

And last but not least people were asked what they thought the mysterious Tsar would be like. Some of their initial impressions were...
